Is CELPIP Harder Than IELTS? Honest Comparison for 2026
CELPIP and IELTS test the same four skills but feel very different on test day. Most Canadian-based candidates find CELPIP easier — but the reasons why…
Is CELPIP Harder Than IELTS?
For most candidates applying through Canada Express Entry system, CELPIP is considered easier than IELTS General Training — but this depends on your specific strengths and weaknesses. CELPIP tends to be easier for candidates already living in Canada, people comfortable typing quickly, and candidates who find computer-based tests less stressful. IELTS tends to be easier for candidates trained in traditional academic writing, people who score highly in face-to-face speaking, and candidates outside Canada more familiar with British Council test formats.
Key Differences That Affect Difficulty
Speaking format: IELTS Speaking is a 15-minute face-to-face interview with a human examiner. CELPIP Speaking is recorded into a microphone — no human present. Many candidates find the CELPIP format less anxiety-inducing. Writing format: IELTS Writing Task 2 asks for a 250-word essay. CELPIP Writing Task 2 is a survey response — simpler in structure but requiring a clear position and reasons. Listening accents: IELTS uses British, Australian, and North American accents. CELPIP uses exclusively Canadian English accents throughout.
Score Comparison: CELPIP vs IELTS for Express Entry
Both tests are accepted for Express Entry and mapped to CLB levels. The approximate equivalents:
- CELPIP 10–12 ≈ IELTS 8.0–9.0 per skill → CLB 10
- CELPIP 9 ≈ IELTS 7.5 per skill → CLB 9
- CELPIP 8 ≈ IELTS 6.5–7.0 per skill → CLB 8
- CELPIP 7 ≈ IELTS 6.0 per skill → CLB 7
A CELPIP 9 and an IELTS 7.5 are treated identically by IRCC — you earn the same CRS points regardless of which test you took.
Which Test Should You Take?
Take CELPIP if you are currently living in Canada and used to Canadian English, prefer computer-based testing, or want results faster (CELPIP results in ~8 business days vs up to 13 for IELTS). Take IELTS if you are outside Canada and more familiar with British English, prefer essay-style writing, or want global flexibility (accepted in over 140 countries).
Can You Take Both Tests?
Yes — both scores are valid for two years and both are accepted for Express Entry simultaneously. Some candidates take both tests to see which gives higher CRS points. If your IELTS gives CLB 8 but you think you could achieve CLB 9 on CELPIP, booking a CELPIP attempt is worth it.
Fastest Way to Prepare for CELPIP
If you have decided on CELPIP, the fastest improvement path is targeted section practice — not general English study. Identify which of the four skills is your lowest CLB, practice that section with timed questions, and take a full mock exam before booking your real test. CELPIPACE offers section-by-section practice for all four CELPIP skills with instant scoring, plus full-length mock exams.
